Solar Shades vs. Roller Shades: What’s the Difference?

Solar shades and roller shades use the same basic hardware. A single panel of material rolls up neatly onto a tube at the top of the window. The difference is the material, and that changes what each shade does in your home. Understanding it helps you choose the right shade for every room.

What Is a Solar Shade?

A solar shade is a type of roller shade made from a woven screen fabric. The weave lets you see out while it cuts glare and reduces the sun’s heat and UV rays reaching your furniture and floors. Fabrics come in different openness levels. A more open weave keeps more of the view, and a tighter weave blocks more light and glare.

What Is a Standard Roller Shade?

A standard roller shade uses a solid fabric, either light filtering or room darkening and blackout. Instead of keeping the view, it softens or blocks the light and gives you full privacy when it’s down. It’s the better choice when you want darkness or privacy more than a view.

Side-by-Side Comparison

  • View: solar shades keep your outside view during the day, while solid roller shades cover it.
  • Glare: solar shades are designed to cut glare on screens and bright windows while letting daylight in.
  • Daytime privacy: solar shades provide some daytime privacy, because it’s usually brighter outside than in.
  • Nighttime privacy: with lights on inside, people can see in through solar shades, so solid roller shades are better for bedrooms and street-facing rooms after dark.
  • Darkness: only solid room-darkening or blackout roller fabrics truly darken a room.

Can You Have Both?

Yes. Dual roller shades pair a solar shade and a solid shade in one bracket, so you can choose the view by day and privacy by night. Both styles also work with Lutron motorization, which makes managing a wall of glass effortless.

Which Rooms Suit Each Shade

Living rooms, kitchens, and lanai sliders with water or golf views are often best with solar shades. Bedrooms, media rooms, and nurseries usually call for room-darkening or blackout roller fabrics. Home offices often benefit from solar shades that tame screen glare.
